Community Involvement

PLA's mission extends beyond our Beautification projects. We are concerned about other issues and activities that affect the quality of life for all Peninsula residents. Here are some of our recent efforts

PLA SUPPORTS NEW LIBRARY

The PLA Board voted in February, 2003, to make a significant donation to the new James Edgar and Jean Jessop Hervey Branch Library. The $10,000 pledge will be paid over a three-year period. Funds were designated for a bench with a donor plaque at the front of the building. In addition, PLA will have options for sponsoring specific landscaping upgrades on the library grounds and/or making contributions to the interior.

PLA SUPPORTS THE POINT LOMA HIGH SCHOOL PTSA

In 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005, PLA has made a donation to the Point Loma High School Parent Teacher Student Association to support the annual Kick Off. This event brings students, families and the entire community together for a dinner dance following the first football home game of the season. Kick Off is the major fundraiser for PTSA, supporting all PTSA activities for the year, with any extra funds allocated to classroom equipment requests, including new furniture for the school library. A bright PLA banner is proudly displayed at the Kick Off and at every home game of the season.

POINT LOMA STREET BANNER PROGRAM

Creation of the Point Loma Street Banner District was a goal of the Point Loma Association for several years prior to its approval by the San Diego City Council in May 2000. The basis of the current Street Banner District was the street banner poles and hardware installed by the Port District on Shelter Island Drive, Scott Street and North Harbor Drive as part of the festivities associated with the defense of the America's Cup sailing races in 1995. Former PLA President Mark Bitterlin arranged with the Port District for the PLA to assume the rights to utilize and expand that district for the benefit of the Point Loma community. The key to the PLA's ability to initiate the District in the spring of 2000 was the receipt of a community improvement grant from San Diego County, through the auspices of Supervisor Greg Cox. Those funds enabled the PLA to purchase additional hardware for Rosecrans Street and the original banners. Finally, with the assistance of Councilmember Byron Wear, in May 2000, we obtained the approved of our Banner District by the San Diego City Council. We designed, purchased and installed our initial community banner "Welcome to Point Loma - A Great Place to Be" just in time for our Annual Dinner in May of 2000. This banner features the PLA logo of the Point Loma Lighthouse at the Cabrillo Monument.

The district currently consists of 69 banner locations along Rosecrans, Scott, North Harbor Drive and Shelter Island Drive. We are in discussions with the Port District to add a handful of additional locations on Shelter Island Drive. We charge a nominal sum ($5.00 per banner) for groups that would like to utilize all or a portion of the district. We have flown programs for the San Diego Zoo, the Super Bowl Committee, the Mingei Museum, the Cabrillo Festival, the Holiday Parade of Lights, the Port District's 40th Anniversary program, the Point Loma Chamber of Commerce's Cultural Fair as well as our own community banners. We just added a second community banner in 2003 for the spring and summer months which reads "Welcome to Point Loma" and features a floral design of yellow daisies. Our next project will be a Holiday Banner for the 2003 Holiday Season. (photo of spring banner)

PLA WATER STATION FOR
AMERICAN’S FINEST CITY HALF MARATHON

Every summer, PLA sponsors the Mile 3 Water Station for the America’s Finest City Half Marathon. This began over 10 years ago as a spontaneous grass-roots effort, inspired by the residents’ desire to help the runners and welcome them to the neighborhood.

We set up the station on Dupont Street at Albion. With PLA’s sponsorship, we are able to provide the volunteers needed to keep the water flowing for more than 5,000 athletes on the first leg of their race. If you would like to volunteer for this mid-August activity, please call Melanie Nickel at 225-8705.

POINT LOMA CONCERT SERIES

The Summer Concerts at Point Loma Park are planned and produced by community volunteers with leadership from the Concerts Committee, Point Loma Association. We collaborate with more than a dozen civic organizations and youth groups to present these delightful musical events.

The free concerts are funded by public and private grants, by business and individual sponsorships, and by generous donations of cash, goods and services. PLA facilitates applications to the City and County for Summer Concerts funding.
